Transformational change follows a repeating pattern:
Chaos > Intervention > Order > Testing
Every consequential change begins with some form of chaos — brokenness, disorder, or a condition that is insufficient or not as it should be. This is the birthplace of vision for change—a leader who recognizes the untenable situation, sees a clear future state vision, and is resolved to take the necessary action to restore a new order.
Intervention disrupts existing systems and structures so that new forms, clarity, and alignment can take shape. The path to order always involves testing—resistance emerges, opposition appears, and the leader’s own character and resolve are challenged. This is not failure; it is a proving ground and evidence that change is actively unfolding.
Testing creates new instability, leading to another phase of chaos and restarting the cycle, where each new intervention and new level of order introduces new pressures, challenges, tests and insights.
Chaos does not mean the mission is failing; it is the birthplace of vision.
Intervention is not for the naïve; it requires courage.
Order is not linear; it demands disciplined action and sustained resolve.
Testing does not mean the mission is wrong; it produces critical insight.
When the stakes are high and complexity rises, recognizing this pattern enables leaders to discern where they are in the process and regain perspective—to stay steady under pressure, deepen resolve, and move forward with clarity.
